A total of 2,660,748 m2 of Azeri land has been cleared of landmines in August 2006. Officials of Azerbaijan National Agency for Mine Action (ANAMA) told Trend during this period 32,909 items of unexploded ordnance were found and de-activated.
The operation involved a team of 22 trained dogs, 138 sappers, 15 Р HS operators, 8 emergency doctors and nearly 100 laborers.
During its entire activity ANAMA cleared 34,844,304 m2 of landmines. In that area a total of 59,627 items of unexploded ordnance were found and de-activated. Since 2001, there have been 78 mine explosions which resulted in the death of 49 persons and 109 injuries.
