Azerbaijan Islamic Party Won’t Support Candidate from Opposition Party

Azerbaijan, Baku / Trend corr. S.Ilhamgizi / The Islamic Party of Azerbaijan (IPA) will take part in the upcoming 2008 presidential elections with its own candidate or boycott the elections, Movsum Samadov, the chairman of the party said.

A decision concerning the presidential elections will be made during the next meeting of the party. IPA's members will not support a candidate from the opposition camp.

Akif Heydarli, the head of the IPA's press-service reported that some members of the party want to nominate Samadov as their candidate during the upcoming presidential elections.

If the elections are to be held democratically the IPA will nominate its candidate, Heydarli said.

The Islamic Party of Azerbaijan was founded in August 1991 and was registered by the Justice Ministry in 1992. The state registration of the party was cancelled in 1995.
