Problem with nomination of candidates for municipal elections occured inside the party supporting policy of Azerbaijani authorities.

"Several members of regional offices of our party, citing that status of municipalities is limited, do not want to nominate candidature at elections", chairman of Vahdat party, Tahir Kerimli, told Trend on August 5.

Azerbaijani municipal elections are scheduled for autumn 2009. Municipal elections were held twice in 1999 and 2004.

The Azerbaijani Parliament adopted the law Unification of several municipalities in May.

Number of municipalities was reduced from 2,757 to 1,766 in Azerbaijan.

Kerimli said that number of candidates from parties for municipalities will be specified in September. "We decided to participate in elections independently. However, we will not nominate our own candidates at election districts where stronger candidates from ruling party are nominated", chairman of the party said.

Kerimli said that there is possibility to cooperate with other parties. "Cooperation can not be in support of single candidate, but only in conducting joint campaign and monitoring elections," Kerimli said.

Vahdat party headed by ex-chairman of Azerbaijani Supreme Court, ex-MP, Tahir Kerimli, was oppositional till 2006. At present, the party supports policy of the government.
