Vano Merabishvili's candidacy for the post of Secretary General of United National Movement was approved by a majority vote at the congress of the former ruling party of Georgia held on Monday. He replaced Mikhail Machavariani.
"My main plan will be to create a new, modern party, just as then, in 2003, the United National Movement created a new state," Merabishvili said in a briefing.
He was introduced to his colleagues by Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili. "Vano Merabishvili will serve as the Secretary General of the party at the time when the party needs update," Saakashvili, the leader of United National Movement said.
According to preliminary data of the CEC the Georgian Dream coalition win the parliamentary election, which was held on October 1. Saakashvili acknowledged the defeat of his party United National Movement and announced about the transition to the opposition. The president granted the request of the Government to resign on October 10.
According to preliminary calculations, the Georgian Dream is to get 86 seats at the Parliament and the party of Saakashvili - 64.
