BAKU, Azerbaijan, October 15. Azerbaijan and the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) have discussed preparatory work on the organization of the Parliamentary Conference within the framework of the 29th session of the Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP29) in Geneva, Switzerland, Trend reports via the Azerbaijani parliament's statement.
According to the statement, the discussion was held during a meeting between Azerbaijani Parliament's chair Sahiba Gafarova, who is on a working visit to Geneva, and IPU Secretary General Martin Chungong.
The statement said that the meeting also reviewed the cooperation issues between the parliament and IPU.
Besides, the meeting pointed out that the Azerbaijani parliament, collaborating with international parliamentary structures on both a bilateral and multilateral basis, places significant importance on strengthening ties with IPU, while successful joint organization of events creates opportunities for further deepening cooperation.
Chungong welcomed Azerbaijan's active representation in the organization.
Moreover, the meeting expressed confidence that the parliamentary conference will provide crucial support for the activities held under COP29, facilitating the exchange of views and allowing parliamentarians to present proposals and new ideas in the fight against climate change, added the statement.
This November, Azerbaijan will host COP29. This decision was made at the COP28 plenary meeting held in Dubai on December 11 last year. Baku will become the center of the world and will receive about 70–80,000 foreign guests.
The United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change is an agreement signed at the Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro in June 1992 to prevent dangerous human interference with the climate system. COP—the Conference of the Parties—is the highest legislative body overseeing the implementation of the Framework Convention on Climate Change. There are 198 countries that are parties to the Convention. Unless the parties agree otherwise, the COP is held annually. The first COP event took place in March 1995 in Germany's Berlin with its secretariat in Bonn.
