BAKU, Azerbaijan, May 7.​ On May 7, 2025, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Azerbaijan Jeyhun Bayramov met with Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs of this country Fuad Hussein within the framework of his official visit to Iraq, the Azerbaijani MFA told Trend.

The one-on-one meeting of the ministers continued in an expanded format with the participation of delegations of both sides.

During the expanded meeting, the sides discussed issues of bilateral and regional cooperation on the agenda between the two countries, particularly the prospects of partnership in economy, trade, energy, transportation, communications, science, culture, education, tourism, as well as the regional and global situation.

Moreover, the role of the existing historical friendship and brotherhood between Azerbaijan and Iraq, as well as cultural and traditional closeness between our peoples in the development of our relations was discussed. The importance of high-level contacts and visits, as well as the mechanism of political consultations for further expansion of cooperation was emphasized.

Minister Jeyhun Bayramov drew attention to the importance of existing cooperation mechanisms between the two countries, particularly the Intergovernmental Joint Commission on Trade, Economic, Scientific, Technical and Cultural Cooperation and the Azerbaijan-Iraq Business Council, and stressed the importance of utilizing prospects for the development of bilateral economic relations, especially cooperation in the fields of energy and mutual investments.

The meeting, which discussed cooperation within regional and international organizations, including the UN, the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), the Non-Aligned Movement, and the Conference on Interaction and Confidence Building Measures in Asia (CICA), also highlighted the importance of continuing the support provided within multilateral platforms.

Furthermore, the development of cooperation in humanitarian and educational spheres was discussed, and the usefulness of such initiatives as scholarship programs for students from OIC and Non-Aligned Movement member states, including the Heydar Aliyev International Educational Scholarship, was emphasized.

During today's visit, it was also noted that the signing of the Memorandum of Understanding on Cooperation between ADA University and the Foreign Service Institute of the Republic of Iraq was a significant development in enhancing cooperation in the field of education.

The meeting also discussed in detail regional and international security issues, the current situation in the Middle East, tensions between India and Pakistan, and the post-conflict realities of our region, the rehabilitation and reconstruction of our country, demining, and peace efforts.

The meeting also witnessed the exchange of views on other topical agenda issues and topics of mutual interest.

Afterwards, the ministers made statements on the outcome of the meeting in an organized press conference with the participation of media representatives.
