Azerbaijan marks the National Revival Day on 17 November. This date was declared state holiday in 1992. It is related to the November-December 1988 events, when continuous rally started in former Lenin square (present Freedom) in protest to the policy pursued by the authorities on the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict, Trend reports.
The square was surrounded by the internal troops drawn to Baku from different places of the USSR, which forced out the participants of the rally from 3 to 4 December and arrested them.
The events are appreciated in Azerbaijan as beginning of national liberation movement, which led to independence of the country.
