Over 200 HIV Carriers among Prisoners in Azerbaijan
Azerbaijan, Baku, 12 Mrch / Trend corr. K.Zarbaliyeva / There are over 200 HIV and AIDS carriers among the prisoners in Azerbaijan, Nazim Alakbarov, Deputy Justice Minister and chief of Penitentiary Sservice, reported on 12 March.
For the protection purpose other prisoners are not informed about the virus carriers.
The Anti AIDS Centre has expressed its anxiety in connection with the wide spread of virus among the prisoners. Most infected prisoners are drug addicts.
According to the information by World Health Organization, about 2.5mln of people were infected with AIDS in 2007, but at present, their number reaches nearly 33.2mln.
In 2007, 441 HIV infected persons were registered in Azerbaijan and forty-eight people died from AIDS.
About 1,379 HIV infected people have been registered in Azerbaijan from 1987 to 2007. Some 209 people out of 1,320, got this infection from abroad. From 1992 to 2007, some 416 families were registered with HIV virus.
