Azerbaijan Need to Adopt Amnesty Act – Parliamentary Commission Chairman

Azerbaijan, Baku, 23 April / Trend corr. I.Alizade / Azerbaijani needs to adopt the Amnesty Act to release old, ill and women, who serve their sentence in prisons of Azerbaijan. "We are concerned with presence of old, ill and women, who serve their sentence in prisons of the country," Rabiyat Aslanova, Chairman of the standing Parliamentary Commission on Human rights, stated to Trend on 23 April.

Eight Amnesty Acts have been passed in the country so far. The latest Act was issued in connection with the 84th anniversary of Heydar Aliyev on 10 May 2007. Eight Amnesty Act covered 87,000 people including 23,000 prisoners were released.

Aslanova stated that the prisoners and their families are waiting adoption of the Amnesty Act. Prisoners, who served half of their sentence and understood their mistake, should be released, Aslanova stated.

Aslanova added that the State is paying more attention on pardon of prisoners. "Presently, Ilham Aliyev, Azerbaijani President, follows the human policy laid by Heydar Aliyev, former Azerbaijani President," Aslanova stated.
