Jubilant post-match celebrations in Switzerland passed off peacefully, police said Monday.
In Basle crowds of Portuguese fans were the first to congratulate Swiss supporters over their 2:0 victory against them while Euro organizers congratulated the supporters on the "extraordinary atmosphere" which has marked a trouble-free tournament so far, reported dpa.
Fewer fans had turned out though to back the host team knowing Portugal's place in the quarter finals was assured and the Swiss were heading out.
Organizers claimed a crowd of around 61,000 had gathered in the city, 20,000 less than for the tournament's opening match a little over a week ago when the Swiss took on the Czech Republic.
The career of national coach Koebi Kuhn had ended with "a great victory," said the French-language radio Radio Suisse Romand, even if it was not enough to prevent them going out. It was Kuhn's last game having announced his retirement before the tournament.
In Geneva fears that trouble might mar the final game played in the city never materialized. Turkey's stunning 3:2 comeback against the Czech Republic secured its place in the next round.
Many Czech fans took flights or buses home immediately after the match as scheduled.
In Lausanne, a few kilometres away from Geneva where a fans could watch on a giant screen, traffic was blocked as Swiss took to the streets in celebration.
