Iraq's Olympic team of five athletes headed Saturday to neighbouring Kuwait on its way to Beijing where they will participate in the Games, according to sports sources, the dpa reported.
Weightlifter Swara Mohammed had earlier pulled out due to injury, sources from Iraq's interim national sports committee told the Voices of Iraq news agency.
The International Olympic Committee (IOC) agreed Tuesday to allow Iraq to take part in the Beijing Olympics, reversing a previous ban.
In talks with the IOC, Iraqi officials vowed to ensure the independence of its national Olympic committee after the Iraqi government dissolved the committee in May.
The Iraqi team will compete in rowing, archery and track and field events.
