The Azerbaijani Press Council hopes the imprisoned journalists will be discharged in the next pardon decree.

"We applied to the governmental bodies to pardon the imprisoned journalists. If a pardon decree is issued on the eve of Novruz holiday, we do not exclude our appeal to be considered," Press Council Chairman Aflatun Amashov told Trend on Feb. 13.

The detained journalists include Azadlig newspaper Chief Editor Ganimat Zahid, Azadlig journalist Mirza Sakit, Gundalik Azerbaijan and Realni Azerbaijan newspapers Chief Editor Eynulla Fatullayev.

Member of Azerbaijani Parliament Vagif Samadoglu told Trend that he supports discharge of the imprisoned journalists.

"Courts proved these journalists' crimes and sentenced them. They have been already served their punishment. I think it is possible to pardon all of them at the moment," Member of the Pardon Commission at the Azerbaijani President Samadoglu said.

In accordance with 45 signed pardon decrees, 4,858 people have been set free since 1994. Ilham Aliyev inked 13 decrees and National Leader Heydar Aliyev - 32 decrees. Eight amnesty acts, which so far have been signed, concerned 40,000 prisoners.
