Baku is 2009 Islamic cultural capital

Baku has become the Islamic cultural capital for 2009.

Baku was named the Islamic cultural capital for 2009 at the Fifth Tripoli Conference of the Organization of Islamic Conference (OIC) foreign ministers in November 2007.

An official ceremony is underway at the Heydar Aliyev Palace to announce Baku as the Islamic cultural capital for 2009.

ISESCO Secretary General Abdulaziz Bin Osman Al Twaijri, four ministers and deputy ministers of Islamic nations and representatives of international organizations and European cultural capitals are attending the ceremony.

"I am pleased to be here today. We are glad Baku has become a capital of the Islamic world. I congratulate all the citizens of your city on this occasion," Al Twaijri said.

A Web site dedicated to event will also open on Feb. 18.

A Baku photo exhibition will begin at the Centerat Museum at 16:00 today.

The works of Azerbaijani and foreign photographers will be exhibited.  

Documentaries on Azerbaijani culture and history will also be shown.

A concert will be organized for youth in front of the Nizami Literature Museum and Puppet Show Theater.

Fireworks will begin at 21:00. All Azerbaijani museums will be open for visitors until Feb. 20.

A logo and flag dedicated to the event have been designed by Azerbaijani painters.

The logo depicts an Azerbaijani carpet and Maiden's Tower.
