Extradition of Azerbaijani Prisoners from Kazakhstan, Ukraine and Latvia Face Problems

Society Materials 4 June 2007 14:33 (UTC +04:00)

Azerbaijan, Baku / Trend corr. K.Zarbaliyeva / Zaver Gafarov, the head of the International Cooperation Administration, has stated that there are problems in the extradition of Azerbaijani prisoners, serving sentences in Kazakhstan, Ukraine and Latvia.

The prisoners must be transferred to Azerbaijan via the territory of Russia, which in turn does not permit the transfer. Problems with extradition among country-members of the Convention on Extradition of prisoners occur only with Russia, who has not passed the document yet.

" Russia will sanction the document at the end of 2007. There will be no problems in the extradition of Azerbaijani prisoners if Russia sanctions the document. In compliance with the convention the territory of country members of the document can be used to transfer prisoners," Gafarov noted.

Currently, one Azerbaijani citizen is serving his sentence in Latvia, three in the Ukraine and several prisoners in Georgia.

Others ways to transfer Azerbaijani prisoners are under discussion.
