Society Materials 7 June 2007 19:40 (UTC +04:00)

Azerbaijan, Baku / Trend corr.I, Alizadeh / MP Siyavush Novruzov, a member of the Permanent Parliamentary Commission on Security and Defense Issues stated on 4 June that the Milli Majlis (Azerbaijan Parliament) would introduce changes to the rules of enlisting for military service.

"The Law on Alternative Service envisions the consideration of the issue by the Court, as the Commission determines the convenience of call-ups for military service should include psychologists and other specialists. From this point of view, consideration to form new staff of the commission will be submitted to the autumn session of the Parliament," Novruzov added.

According to the MP, there are no enlistings in Great Britain, the Netherlands, Japan, and many other countries. Military service in these countries is voluntary.

"We intend this commission to equate that of the Turkish or other systems which function in other countries. Since 2007 our army has been complying with NATO standards, which is to accordingly change the system for military service in compliance with the NATO structure," Novruzov stressed.

The MP believes that the passing on the responsibility of enlistings to municipalities is impossible. There are no such countries where military service enlisting is carried out by municipal bodies.
