Investigation to Identify Persons linked with AIDS Carrier in Azerbaijan

Azerbaijan, Baku / Trend corr. К.Zarbaliyeva / Agshin Ziyadov, the Prosecutor of Nasimi District, has reported that a criminal case has been filed against Elnara Ahmadova 17, an AIDS carrier. Ahmadova was charged with contravening Article 140.1 (infection of immuno-deficiency). In compliance with the regulations of the Court, Ahmadova was sentenced to 2 months imprisonment.

According to Ziyadov, an investigation is currently being undertaken to identify the persons who have been in contact with Ahmadova. Several persons were questioned.

Ahmadova went to the Dermatovenerologic Dispensary in Ramana settlement in 18 August 2003. An AIDS analysis which was held in the Republic Centre revealed she had the immuno-deficiency virus. Ahmadova was then registered at the Centre. On 28 August the doctor of the Centre visited Ramana settlement and alerted Ahmadova on the dangers of spreading the virus.

For the last two years the Centre had no information on the whereabouts of Ahmadova. On 8 July the Centre was informed that Ahmadova was at the 'Umid Yeri' Children's Home. Sahib Teymurov, the Chairman of the Public association 'Care for Children', together with officials from the 21st department of Nasimi District Police station, brought Ahmadova to the Centre.

Ahmadova had spent time in saunas with young clients in the Surakhani, Khirdalan region, in Masazir and Ahmadli. Ahmadova is currently pregnant and has stated her wish to terminate the pregnancy.
