BAKU, Azerbaijan, April 16. The role of the transport sector in Azerbaijan’s economy has grown significantly in recent years, with its share in gross domestic product (GDP) reaching 6.5 percent, said Javid Gurbanov, Deputy Minister of Digital Development and Transport of the Republic of Azerbaijan, Trend reports.
Speaking at the National Business Development Forum held in Baku, Gurbanov shared key economic figures related to the sector.
Gurbanov highlighted that the projects implemented in the transport sector are aligned with modern international standards, emphasizing environmental protection, decarbonization, innovation, and digitalization.
"Efforts are underway to boost Azerbaijan’s transit capacity and position the country as a key transport hub in Eurasia. Recent global geopolitical shifts have further elevated Azerbaijan’s strategic importance in international logistics. As a result, the volume of goods transiting through the country has seen a sharp and rapid increase," he said.
The deputy minister also mentioned that large-scale infrastructure projects are underway in the territories liberated from occupation, including the construction of new transport communications.
"Equally significant is the implementation of the State Program for the Improvement of Transport Infrastructure in Baku and its surrounding areas, approved earlier this year. The program aims to establish a sustainable transportation system and enhance the quality of passenger mobility across the capital and neighboring regions," he added.
