With the expansion of Iran’s Chabahar Port, it will be able to accept big ships and its capacity will increase from 2 million tons to 4 million tons per year, Managing Director of Iran’s Ports and Maritime Organization (PMO) Mohammad Rastad said.

He was speaking at the opening ceremony of the 13th International Conference on Coasts, Ports and Marine Structures (ICOPMAS 2018) in Tehran, ILNA reported.

He said that at the next stage, with the creation of a 1,400-meter platform, the capacity of the Shahid Rajaee Port will increase to 8 million containers per year.

He added that expansion of the Shahid Rajaee Port for receiving new generation ships, including those with a length of 400 meters, a width of 60 meters and a capacity of 20,000 TEU is on the agenda.

“Reduction of greenhouse gases in the maritime industry is of paramount importance,” he said. “So, it is necessary to reduce the use of sulfur chemicals in the ships’ fuel. In order to implement this, at least $2 million of investments are required for each ship.”
