BAKU, Azerbaijan, November 15. Iran's sprat fishing from the Caspian Sea decreased by 22 percent, during the first seven months of the current Iranian year (March 21 through October 22, 2022), compared to the same period last Iranian year, Deputy Chairman of Iran Fisheries Organization Abbas Pour Naderi said, Trend reports citing the organization’s website.

Pour Naderi said that Iran caught a total of 7,947 tons of sprat from the Caspian Sea in 7 months.

“Generally, 73 vessels are engaged in sprat fishing in Iran’s Gilan and Mazandaran provinces,” he added.

According to the deputy chairman, in 7 months, each vessel caught an average of about 1,900 kilograms of sprat. This shows a 13-percent decrease compared to the same period last Iranian year.

Pour Naderi also pointed out that sprat is nutritionally more important than bony fish. However, because sprat is not important in Iran’s food basket, more than 40 percent of the caught sprat is used for the production of fish powder.
