TOTAL E&P Absheron B.V. (Total) has tasked Norwegian HydraWell company to execute a part of plug and abandonment campaign at the Absheron field in the Caspian Sea, the Norwegian company said in a message Feb. 16.

Total acts as operator for and on behalf of a consortium presently composed of Total E&P Absheron B.V. (50 percent) and SOCAR Absheron LLC (50 percent).

“To execute the campaign, HydraWell will utilise its HydraHemeraTM Perf, Wash and Cement (PWC®) jetting system, which can install a rock-to-rock barrier in two days,” the message said.

“We have earlier supported Total elsewhere, but this is our first job in Azerbaijan,” says Mark Sorheim, CEO of HydraWell. “As cost reductions are still very much at the top of the oil industry agenda, it is great to work with operators to bring our Perforate, Wash and Cement® P&A methodology into new offshore regions.”

The contract value for HydraWell is undisclosed.

Earlier, Azerbaijan’s state oil company SOCAR and Total signed a framework agreement on the main contractual and commercial principles regulating the program of the first phase of Absheron field’s development.

The first phase of the field’s development envisages drilling one well at a sea depth of 450 meters. Output will stand at up to 1.5 billion cubic meters of gas per year and these volumes, coupled with considerable amount of condensate, will be used in Azerbaijan’s domestic market. In the second phase, it is planned to produce up to 4 billion cubic meters of gas per year.

Total specialists estimate the reserve of the Absheron field to stand at 326 billion cubic meters of gas and 108 million tons of condensate.
