Turkmenistan may become leading exporter of electricity in Central Asia

Turkmenistan has every opportunity to become one of the leading exporters of electricity in the Central Asian region, Trend reports referring to the Neutral Turkmenistan newspaper.

As part of the Concept for the Development of the Electric Power Industry of Turkmenistan, the country continues to implement large-scale projects to modernize and build power plants, lay power lines, build substations, upgrade the energy supply system and expand export of electricity to foreign markets.

In particular, the Turkmenistan-Afghanistan-Pakistan-India (TAPI) gas pipeline construction project includes laying power transmission lines along the route.

In addition, the report mentions the flagship of local energy industry - Mary power plant. By the end of 2014, its capacities totaled 1,831.7 megawatts in all power units. In the second half of last year, a combined-cycle power plant equipped with four gas and two steam turbines of the US General Electric was commissioned on the territory of the facility.

In accordance with the Program for the Socio-Economic Development of Turkmenistan, the total amount of electricity to be produced in the country in the next seven years is planned to be increased to 33 billion kilowatt-hours.
