BAKU, Azerbaijan, June 5

By Leman Zeynalova – Trend:

All permits have been obtained for applying Chinese technology at the Kursangi and Garabagli fields in Azerbaijan, a source on the country's oil and gas market told Trend.

Nevertheless, the source noted that at the moment, the work on applying the Chinese technology in the fields has been suspended amid coronavirus.

“At present, routine work is underway at the fields, well repair work is ongoing. The volume of production from the fields is 395 tons per day. A sharp decline in production has been prevented thanks to minor repair works,” the source said.

The source noted that currently, production at the fields is conducted from 235 wells.

The Chinese technology is about injecting hot air into the reservoirs, which will allow to raise the oil recovery ratio by 15-20 percent and resume production at exhausted and old wells.

If the pilot project brings positive results, this technology will also be used in other projects of Azerbaijan’s state oil company SOCAR.

The contract for development of Kursangi and Garabagli fields was signed in 1998 for a period of 25 years. The shareholders of Salyan Oil are Azerbaijan’s state oil company SOCAR and China National Oil & Gas Exploration and Development.

The fields are located in Azerbaijan’s Salyan district, around 150 kilometers from Baku. Some experts believe that the remaining reserves on the contract area exceed 150 million tons.

The fields produced around 155,000 tons of oil in 2018, as compared to 162,000 tons in 2017.
