BAKU, Azerbaijan, August 9. The electricity generation of Iran's thermal power plants has increased to about 72,000 megawatt-hours, Deputy Director of Iran’s Thermal Power Plants Holding Company (TPPH), Mohammad Ramazani said, Trend reports citing Iranian Energy Ministry.

According to Ramazani, the reason for the increase in the power generation capacity of the country's thermal power plants is the launch of a new unit at the Semnan Thermal Power Plant (northern Iran).

The deputy added that so far, a total of 599 power units inside 132 TPPs have been commissioned in the country. Of these, 393 units are owned by the private sector and can generate about 49,000 megawatt-hours of electricity.

“At present, the power generation capacity of combined cycle units is 34,246 megawatt-hours, the gas units - 21,791 megawatt-hours, and the steam units - 15,829 megawatt-hours,” he said.

The total capacity of Iran's power plants (thermal, hydroelectric, nuclear, renewable, and so on) is currently over 89,000 megawatt-hours. Of this, 81 percent accounts for the country’s thermal power plants.
