BAKU, Azerbaijan, May 31. The electricity exchange potential between Iran and Turkmenistan will double with the construction of the new Merv-Sarakhs power line on the border of the two countries, Iran's Energy Minister Ali Akbar Mehrabian said during a meeting with a high-level official delegation of Turkmenistan in Tehran, Trend reports.
The minister noted that currently, the electricity exchange potential between the two countries is 500 megawatt-hours. With the construction of the mentioned power line, the electricity exchange potential between the two countries will reach 1,000 megawatt-hours.
He added that in recent years, a special electric line has been laid from the city of Sarakhs to the city of Mashhad in Iran.
Mehrabian said that both countries have great potentials in the field of electricity and it is possible to use these potentials for mutual electricity exchange.
"Iran and Turkmenistan have common water sources, and there are positive relations between the two countries in this field. For example: ‘Friendship Dam’ is a joint dam between two countries. This dam is used under a regulated program. The border rivers of the two countries are continuously being negotiated and the border rivers are being used jointly," he said.
There are currently 616 power units operating in 134 TPPs in Iran. The power generation capacity of the country's thermal power plants is 74,198 megawatt-hours.
At present, the power generation capacity of Iran's all power plants including, thermal, hydroelectric, nuclear, renewable, etc. is approximately 91,000 megawatt-hours. Of this, 82 percent are accounted for by the country’s thermal power plants.
Overall, Iran’s thermal power plants generated approximately 333 million megawatt-hours of electricity over the last Iranian year, which is an increase of 3 percent compared to the preceding Iranian year (March 21, 2021 through March 20, 2022).
