BAKU, Azerbaijan, May 14. The details of the Turkish-Azerbaijani agreement on cooperation on natural gas signed in Istanbul have become known, Trend reports.

''This agreement covered several important issues,'' an informed source noted.

“This mid-term agreement reflects the intention to continue gas supplies from Phase 1 of Shah Deniz field development, as the agreement on such supplies expired this year. Also, the Turkish side provides an opportunity for Azerbaijan to transport an additional 2.5 million cubic meters of gas per day to the EU territory (to Bulgaria at the Balkan Gas Hub) through the gas distribution hub “Malkochlar” on the Turkish-Bulgarian border (spot gas supplies if such additional volumes are available). The third point is that Azerbaijan undertakes to ensure transit of Turkmen gas to Türkiye through its territory (from the border with Iran),” the source said.

To note, Türkiye's Energy Minister Alparslan Bayraktar told Turkish media that Türkiye and Azerbaijan will continue cooperation within the framework of the joint Baku-Tbilisi-Erzurum (BTE) and Trans-Anatolian Natural Gas Pipeline (TANAP) gas pipeline projects, which not only ensure the security of their supply chains but also make a significant contribution to the security of energy supply to the EU.

Meanwhile, Türkiye has been supplied with Azeri gas via the BTE since 2007 and via TANAP since 2018. At the same time, TANAP also ensures the transit of Azerbaijani gas to Europe.

Azerbaijan is the second-largest supplier of pipeline gas to Türkiye after Russia.
