BAKU, Azerbaijan, April 25

By Ilkin Seyfaddini – Trend:

The World Bank approved a $95 million funding package to support emergency measures to mitigate the impact of the Coronavirus Pandemic (COVID-19) on the health and well-being of citizens of Uzbekistan, Trend reports citing the WB.

"The World Bank's funding is provided as part of a package that was formed by a coalition of international partners to support the authorities' efforts to protect the population from pandemic threats," said Hideki Mori, World Bank Country Manager for Uzbekistan.

"The World Health Organisation (WHO), other UN agencies, international financial institutions including the World Bank Group, bilateral aid agencies and non-governmental organisations including Médecins Sans Frontières (Doctors Without Borders) are united in their efforts to support the country during these difficult times," the message said.

The project, with the assistance of the World Bank, will spend about $38 million to improve the national health system for surveillance, prevention and control of the coronavirus infection. It will also be used to purchase personal protective equipment, medicines and medical equipment, including ventilators to equip hospitals treating patients infected with coronavirus.

Around $57 million in project funds will be used to expand government programs to support low-income families and provide one-off payments to unemployed citizens.

On April 21, President of Uzbekistan Shavkat Mirziyoyev awarded the World Bank Vice President Cyril Muller, with the Dustlik (Friendship) Order.
