Iran Expediency Council starts reviewing of FATF related bills

TEHRAN, Iran, Dec. 25

Trend:

The Chairman of Iran's Expediency Discernment Council of the System announced the beginning of the reviewing of FATF related bills in the Council after the Supreme Leader`s order

“According to the Supreme Leader's order, following the request of the President, the first meeting of the commissions related to the FATF issue was held on Tuesday (December 22),” the Chairman of Iran's Expediency Discernment Council of the System, Ayatollah Amoli Larijani said, Trend reports citing ILNA.

“These meetings will be continued until achieving the final result in the interest of the people and the system,” he said.

The Chairman of the Expediency Council called on all political factions of the country to refrain from forcing any orientation towards this issue via propaganda.

“Our beloved people must be sure that the Expediency Discernment Council will be decided carefully and in accordance with the country's interests,” he said.

Ayatollah Amoli Larijani warned that "after announcing the final results on FATF related bills by the Expediency Council, whether those who accept the result or those who oppose it must abide by the decision of the Council."

“In its previous assessments, the Council had reviewed this issue carefully, and the non-announcement of its final results was in accordance with the national interests,” he added.

The Chairman of the Expediency Discernment Council emphasized that the Council will take into account various reports, recent developments, and other aspects of the issue.

Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei has ordered the re-evaluation of FATF-related bills by the Expediency Council of Iran on December 16.

In February, the Paris-based Financial Action Task Force (FATF) said Iran would remain on its blacklist, calling on its member states to sanction Tehran.

The intergovernmental organization had demanded Iran to approve anti-terrorism legislation by February or it would remain on its blacklist.

Iran has already enacted amendments to its counter-terrorist financing and anti-money laundering acts.

However, bills to ratify such conventions that were already passed by the Iranian parliament wait for the endorsement of the Expediency Council of Iran.
