BAKU, Azerbaijan, November 11. As part of the 29th session of the Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP29), a press conference titled "La Ruta del Clima: Addressing loss and damage, reparations, and climate debt: Human rights obligation, not a charity!" was held in Azerbaijan’s Baku, Trend reports.
The press conference highlighted the urgency of addressing climate change, emphasizing that combating this issue is the responsibility of all nations.
UN Special Rapporteur on Climate Change, Elisa Morgera, stressed that just as climate change is a critical global issue, the fight against it must be treated with equal urgency.
"Although climate change affects the entire planet, the countries that suffer the most are the less developed, developing, or those living under colonial conditions. The number one factor driving this problem is the excessive emissions of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere.
Since the 1990s, these emissions have far exceeded acceptable levels. Our calculations indicate that trillions of dollars are needed to protect the global population from the impacts of climate change. Securing these funds is the primary goal of COP29,” she said.
Morgera also emphasized that tackling climate change must be the responsibility of every nation.
"The measures we take to prevent a climate catastrophe will not only save humanity but also protect flora and fauna. To succeed in combating climate change, political will is essential. Without this, we will not achieve successful results. We cannot wait for COP events to unite our efforts against this global threat. To draw attention to climate change, efforts must be intensified not only by governments but also by civil society."
To raise awareness about climate change, it is crucial to intensify efforts not just from governments but also from civil society. The primary goal is to educate the public about the dire consequences of the climate crisis. Additionally, NGOs must press governments to recognize the urgency of this issue. Without such efforts, meaningful progress will be impossible,” she added.
COP29 is officially starting today in Baku. The event, which will take place from November 11 through 22, will bring together world leaders, politicians, and climate experts to discuss the pressing issues of climate change. Climate finance, emission reduction targets, and global cooperation are on the agenda. It is expected that the results of COP29 will have a significant impact on the formation of the future climate strategy of the planet.
