Azerbaijani Government’s Decision Regarding Implementation of Satellite Project Expected in 2008

Babayeva / In the 1st half of 2008, Azerbaijani Government will make the decision regarding implementation of the projects on launching of Azerbaijan's national network satellite - AzerSat, Azerbaijani Communications & IT Minister, Ali Abbasov, reported at the opening ceremony of a new building of School 270 in Baku's Surakhany district on 15 September.

According to him, the Government, 5 suggestions including technical and economic aspects of the project were submitted to the Government.

At the initial stage the project will be financed by the public funds, later it will become self-supporting. Some 25-30% of the resources of the satellite will be used by Azerbaijan, and the rest power will be sold to the countries in its coverage area.

"That is the key issue included into the suggestions. The company to cooperate with us will have to undertake sale of free powers of the satellite," the Minister said.

Cost of AzerSat makes up $80-100mln. The coverage area of the satellite will include Europe and a part of Asia - Kazakhstan, Turkmenistan, and Iran.

In 2008, Azerbaijan intends to receive a place in the orbit for its satellite. Launch can take place several years after that.
