Digitalization and development of communication services is the basis of the Azerbaijan Digital Hub program, which is currently underway and is aimed at turning Azerbaijan into a regional digital hub, Director General of the AzerTelecom LLC Fuad Allahverdiyev told Trend on Apr. 16.

“Amid the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, the need for infrastructure is growing. The modernization of a stable technological base, the construction of a new technological infrastructure in Azerbaijan are currently important in terms of improving international communication services and increasing the number of internet users,” he noted.

The creation of a sustainable infrastructure as part of this program, carried out by the subsidiary of Bakcell LLC, Azerbaijan’s first mobile operator, and AzerTelecom backbone Internet provider, is a priority,”Allahverdiyev said.

He noted that the project, implemented jointly with Azerbaijan Railways CJSC, provides for the construction of trunk fiber-optic cable lines along the protective strip of the railway, the organization of network connections with telecommunications operators in neighboring countries in the North-South and East-West directions.

Allahverdiyev added that with the introduction of various digital solutions and online platforms by governments and enterprises, the volume of internet traffic between Europe and Asia is growing, and the internet is being used more intensively.

As a result of the implementation of various projects and the creation of a technological base as part of the Azerbaijan Digital Hub program, Azerbaijan will be able to become a central country in the process of transferring internet and content from Europe to Asia.
