Azerbaijan's information technologies are part of the global IT ecosystem, respectively, all cyber threats existing in the world are closely interconnected with Azerbaijan, Ilgar Aliyev, an expert analyst at The Prime Consulting & Management, told Trend.
According to Aliyev, since all business entities in the industry, as well as organizations, banks, digital and online platforms of Azerbaijan are integrated into the web systems, they are the main sources of cyber threats in the Azerbaijani segment.
"In connection with the needs of citizens and business entities in Azerbaijan, as you know, such largest payment systems as VISA and MasterCard are integrated. These platforms are among the most vulnerable to both direct cyber attacks and fraudulent mailings on behalf of these organizations," he said.
Aliyev reminded that during the recent 44-day war when Azerbaijan liberated its lands from Armenian occupation, foreign hacker groups sent letters on behalf of Azerbaijani banks and state structures, spread phishing threats through social networks and through false SMS messages.
“This was one of the periods of activation of cyber threats, amid which an increase in cybercrime was noted in Azerbaijan. Another period of cyber threats’ activation fell on the first outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic in our country, where an increase in hacker attacks and the spread of phishing threats were also noted,” Aliyev noted.
