BAKU, Azerbaijan, July 9

By Tamilla Mammadova – Trend:

Georgia received a total of 146,600 foreign visitors in June 2021, which is a record number of tourists since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic in February 2019, Trend reports via the National Tourism Administration.

This amount of visitors was 287 percent higher than during the same month of the previous year.

According to the statistics of the National Tourism Administration, more than half of the visitors - 76,946 visitors entered the country by air last month, which is related to the activated air traffic.

Despite the relative recovery of tourism, its volume is 80 percent less than in the pre-pandemic period (June 2019).

The top five countries from which the foreign visitors entered Georgia were:

Turkey - 29,606 visitors, an increase of 87 percent over the previous year;
Israel - 15,837 visitors, an increase of 3,432 percent over the previous year;
Ukraine - 15,493 visitors, an increase of 1,324 percent over the previous year;
Russia - 14,967 visitors, an increase of 332 percent over the previous year;
Armenia - 13,342 visitors, an increase of 68.7 percent over the previous year;

In 2020, tourism revenue in Georgia decreased by 80 percent, as a result of which the country lost $2.7 billion, compared to 2019.

In the first 5 months of 2021, the country received only $177 million worth of revenues from tourism.
