Cargo transit volume via Kazakhstan's seaports down

BAKU, Azerbaijan, Apr.15

By Nargiz Sadikhova - Trend:

The volume of cargo transported via Kazakhstan’s Aktau and Kuryk seaports amounted 1.6 million tons in 1Q2020, Trend reports with reference to Kazakhstan’s Ministry of Industry and Infrastructural Development.

The ministry said that a total of 1,700 cargos were handled in Kazakhstan’s Kuryk port in 1Q2020, which is 31 percent more than during the same period of last year.

Some 6,400 containers were also transported via Kazakh ports in 1Q2020, over 50 percent of which transported in the Aktau – Baku feeder route and further on Trans-Caspian International Transport Route.

Over the course of last year (Mar. 2019 to Mar. 2020) some six million tons of cargo were transported via Kazakh ports, including 2.2 million tons of oil, 2.5 million tons worth of dry cargo and 1.4 million tons worth of ferry cargo.

In order to further increase cargo turnover the issue of launching new ferry routes between Kuryk ports and Caspian Sea ports of Iran and Russia is being considered. Taking into consideration measures taken to decrease transport component of the Trans-Caspian International Transport Route, the possibility of transporting some of its cargo via Kuryk and Aktau ports is being considered.

Increase of container feeder transport is planned which proved its benefits compared to classic cargo transport routes. The cargo transportation volume via ports is to be increased to 18 million tons by 2030, including 300,000 TEU of containers.

Some 1.3 million tons of cargo were transported via Kazakh ports in 1Q2020, which is 2 percent less than during the same period of last year. In turn, import amounted to 224,900 tons, which is 2 percent more than during the same period of last year (220,800 tons).

Nearly 60,800 tons of transit cargo were handled in the Kazakh ports during the reporting period, which is 14 percent less than during the same period of 2019 (70,100 tons).

Currently there are three operating seaports in Kazakhstan: Aktau, Bautino and Kuryk.

Nowadays Aktau International Commercial Sea Port is a modern multi-purpose terminal that allows the transportation of goods from East to West, from North to South and back 12 months a year and 24 hours a day.

Bautino сargo district is a division Aktau International Commercial Sea Port, and is located in the village of Bautino (150 km from the city of Aktau), in the waters of the Bautino Bay of Tyubkaragansky Gulf.

Kuryk Port is located on the coast of the Caspian Sea, south of Aktau city. The port has direct access to the railway tracks. The ferry complex of the port is designed for transshipment of goods, including grain, petroleum products, fertilizers and chemicals.
