Azerbaijan may adopt legal basis for eTIR procedure

BAKU, Azerbaijan, April 2

By Fidan Babayeva – Trend:

The entry of Annex 1 to the Customs Convention on the International Transport of Goods under Cover of TIR Carnets (TIR Convention), which envisages the legal basis for the eTIR procedure, into force in Azerbaijan is scheduled for May 2021, head of the PR department of the Azerbaijani State Customs Committee Natig Akhundov told Trend on April 2.

“The technical adaptation for the application of this procedure is carried out by the State Customs Committee in accordance with the technical specifications developed by the Sustainable Transport Division of the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) and approved by the member-states of the TIR Convention,” head of the department added.

"The internal procedure for joining the legal framework will be initiated by the Committee,” Akhundov said. “As soon as the legal framework enters into force, we will be ready to start full-scale transportation within the eTIR system.”

The eTIR digital system has been approved as the future TIR system - the only global cross-border transit system.

The aim of the eTIR project and, in particular, the eTIR international system, is to ensure the secure exchange of data between the national customs systems for the international transit of goods, vehicles, or containers in accordance with the provisions of the TIR Convention and to enable the customs structures to manage the data related to the guarantees rendered by guarantee chains to the authorized users of the TIR system.
