BAKU, Azerbaijan, January 15. The volume of cargo transported via railways in Razavi Khorasan Province, located in the northeast of Iran, increased by 14 percent, during the first 9 months of the current Iranian year (March 21 through December 21, 2023), compared to the same period last year, said Mostafa Nasseri Varg, director general of Iran’s Khorasan Railway Department, Trend reports.
In total, 1.33 million tons of cargo were transported for export and transit purposes through Iran's Razavi Khorasan Province’s railways for nine months, Nasseri Varg noted.
He added that 710,000 tons of cargo were transited in the specified period, which is 22 percent more than the same period last year.
“Meanwhile, 620,000 tons of cargo were exported through the province’s railways in 9 months, showing an increase of 13 percent compared with the same period last year,” the director general said.
According to him, the goods were mainly transited and exported to Turkmenistan and other Central Asian countries through the Razavi Khorasan Province’s railways.
In total, around 11.1 million tons of cargo were transited via the roads and railways of the country within 9 months, representing a 37-percent growth from the same period last Iranian year.
The latest data from the Islamic Republic of Iran Customs Administration (IRICA) shows that Iran exported about 102 million tons of non-oil products worth $36.4 billion in the first nine months of the current Iranian year (March 21 through December 21, 2023). This represents a 0.68-percent drop in value but a 26.5 percent rise in volume compared to the same period last year.
The length of railway lines in Iran is currently 14,984 kilometers. At present, 978 locomotives, 29,305 freight wagons, and 2,153 passenger wagons are in operation on Iran's railways.
