IAEA succors Kazakhstan on planning NPP construction

ASTANA, Kazakhstan, September 26. International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) specialists provide advisory support to Kazakhstan on the issue of planning the construction of nuclear power plants, including through conducting missions, said Minister of Energy of Kazakhstan Almasadam Satkaliyev, Trend reports.

"Thus, in March of this year, an IAEA mission was conducted to assess the readiness of Kazakhstan’s nuclear energy infrastructure to make a decision on the construction of a nuclear power plant," he said during his speech at the 67th Annual General Conference of the IAEA in Vienna.

The minister recalled that Kazakhstan’s interaction with the IAEA is carried out within the framework of the technical cooperation program.

"National and regional projects implemented under this program had a great impact on resolving issues of ensuring nuclear and radiation safety in the country and radioecological problems and gave a powerful impetus to the successful development of the peaceful use of atomic energy," he said.

According to him, with the support of the IAEA, the production of radiopharmaceuticals for medical needs has been established and is successfully operating. Personnel training and advanced training of nuclear industry specialists are carried out.

The 67th annual General Conference of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) is taking place in Vienna (Austria). The Kazakh delegation led by Minister of Energy Almasadam Satkaliyev is taking part in this conference.

The IAEA General Conference is a unique platform for discussing strategic issues in the nuclear field and is attended annually by 1,000 representatives from the Agency's 177 member states.

Kazakhstan has been a member of the IAEA since 1994.
