BISHKEK, Kyrgyzstan, July 21. The energy sector of Kyrgyzstan received a total of 11.3 billion soms ($128.5 million) from the republican budget from January through June 2023, Almaz Baketaev, Minister of Finance, said during a cabinet meeting, Trend reports.
According to the minister, a portion of these funds, amounting to 5.4 billion soms ($61.4 million), was allocated for development of energy companies in the country. Additionally, 5.3 billion soms ($60.3 million) aimed to prepare the energy infrastructure for upcoming autumn-winter heating period.
Furthermore, he also said that 416.3 million soms ($4.7 million) was allocated for the construction of the Kambarata HPP-1. Approximately 225 million soms ($2.5 million) was directed towards the construction of the Balasu HPP.
According to the State Statistical Committee of Kyrgyzstan, a total of 6.486 billion kilowatt-hours (kWh) of electricity was generated in the country from January through May 2023, which is 17.3 percent more than in the same period of 2022.
Kyrgyzstan, with its abundant water resources, is actively pursuing the development of hydroelectricity. This includes the rehabilitation of the Toktogul Hydropower Plant (HPP), the commissioning of the second hydraulic unit of the Kambarata HPP, and the modernization of the Uch-Kurgan HPP.
