Turkmenistan has overfulfilled its contractual obligations in silk production this year, about 2,040 tons of silk cocoons have been delivered to the state – 10 tons more than planned, the Neutral Turkmenistan newspaper wrote.

The work in all stages of this production – from the cultivation of mulberry trees, feeding caterpillars and to the production of raw silk and finished products - is adjusted in accordance with modern requirements.

Turkmenabat silkworm breeding factory, the Ashgabat reeling house and Turkmenabat Silk Production Association are leading enterprises in this sector.

The shops, in which silk carpets and scarves, national fabric "keteni", other products are manufactured, have been established in the country. The factory in the capital engaged in the production of panne velvet is also continuously provided with silk fiber.

Silk production can become one of the key sectors of the local agricultural industry. Silkworm breeding is widespread throughout the country, except for the western regions, at the same time, more than half of the harvest of cocoons falls on the Lebap velayat (region).

Turkmenistan is the birthplace of silk homespun cloth "keteni". The experts note that, Turkmens have successfully engaged in sericulture since ancient times, their homespun material has been very highly appreciated and has been in great demand due to its strength, as well as the brightness and beauty of its pattern.

The samples of ancient silk fabrics made in the ancient Turkmen city of Merv are preserved in the famous museums of Egypt, Great Britain and the USA.
