Uzbek President Islam Karimov has determined the main tasks of the "Year of Attention and Care for the Older Generation" state program by his decree.

The current year in Uzbekistan has been declared as the Year of Attention and Care for the Older Generation.

According to the president's decree published by the Uzbek media Feb. 19, improving of the pension system and social support, the formation of the most convenient system of rendering public services for the elderly are the main objectives of the state program.

Obtaining various kinds of information and confirming documents were also among those objectives.

The targeted social protection and support for the elderly, especially veterans of WWII war and labor front is planned to be strengthened as part of the state program.

The list of social and personal services rendered to the elderly, especially single elderly and disabled is also expected to be expanded as part of the program.

Their material and moral support is expected to be increased by the mahalla (local self-government), Veteran's Fund "Nuroniy", other non-governmental organizations and social structures.

Moreover, it is planned to take a complex of measures to improve the quality of health and social services for veterans and the elderly, organizing their systemic recovery, expansion of preventive measures, coverage and accessibility of modern methods of treatment of eye and ear diseases, musculoskeletal system and cardiovascular diseases, improve the provision of older and disabled people with auxiliary and technical means of rehabilitation, including on concessional terms.

It is also planned to strengthen the material and technical basis of health and recuperation centers and social service agencies specializing in serving the elderly in Uzbekistan.

Moreover, one of the aims is to improve the organization of life activities and leisure of the elderly. To this end, it is planned to create communication centers, interest clubs, physical culture and sports opportunities for veterans and seniors in Uzbekistan's regions.
