BAKU, Azerbaijan, January 11. Uzbekistan is
looking to improve its local carpet production as well as exports
in accordance with the new plans, Trend reports, referring to the official
statement of the Press Secretary of the Uzbek President.
Uzbekistan's carpet industry was included in the list of economic
sectors that are expected to reach new levels in 2023, as was noted
in the important decisions announced by the leadership of
Uzbekistan on Jan.10.
Uzbekistan plans to allocate $300 million for the textile industry
in 2023, a certain amount of which falls on the carpet
industry.
According to the presidential announcement, the carpet industry of
Uzbekistan was among the sectors where it is estimated to realize
various projects worth $2.6 billion and produce goods worth 4.5
trillion soums ($397 million).
Carpet production is an important component of Uzbekistan's
industrial sector. The country earns about $40 million a year from
carpet exports. Uzbekistan exports carpets not only to neighboring
countries but also to Europe.
Uzbekistan’s main centers of carpet production are ancient cities
such as Khiva, Bukhara and Samarkand, however, new centers continue
to open across the country. For example in June of 2022, backed by
Agrobank's funding, a new carpet-weaving factory was opened in
Termez (Surkhandarya region) on the initiative of Termez National
Carpets LLC. The production capacity of this project was noted to
stand at 4.5 million square meters of carpet items per year.
For the region, such an entrepreneurial project was unique in terms
of scale and direction of the business. The total cost of the
project was reported at 22.2 million euros. Of these, 15.5 million
euros were provided by Agrobank.
According to the latest data from the Uzbek State Statistics
Committee, Uzbekistan’s enterprises produced 30.8 million square
meters of carpets from January through November 2022.
