Official: Bandar Imam Petrochemical Company not responsible for dying fish in Persian Gulf

The managing director of Bandar Imam Petrochemical Company has said that releasing styrene by the company into the Persian Gulf has not been the cause of death of thousands of fish in recent days, the Pana News Agency reported.

Reza Amiri said that if the styrene content reaches 2650 milligrams per kilogramme, it may lead to the death of fish. However the company released 50 milligrams of styrene per kilogramme into the sea.

On Thursday, the Fars News Agency reported that the release of petrochemical waste by the Bandar Imam Petrochemical Company along the Khor Mousa coast, located northwest of the Persian Gulf, led to the death of over 20,000 fish.

Fars quoted Ahmadreza Lahijanzadeh, director of the environment protection department of Khuzestan province, as saying that the release of petrochemical waste which is detrimental to sea creatures, has killed thousands of fish in the region.
