Iran's Hormozgan province may experience shortage of drinking water - Regional Water Company

TEHRAN, Iran, Sep. 8

Trend:

All dams in Hormozgan Province have the capacity to store 608 million cubic meters of water, said the Manager of operation and maintenance of water facilities in Hormozgan Regional Water Company, Trend reports citing IRNA.

The Jagin, Shamil, Nian Sarney dams in Hormozgan Province supply drinking water to nearby regions, Reza Turkmandi indicated.

He noted that the capacity of the dam supplying drinking water and water for agriculture is under 23 percent that indicates an unsuitable situation for the province's water surface resources.

The official has explained that the province's water resources have the capacity to supply drinking water to Bandar Abbas by February, and after that, there would be drought unless there is rainfall otherwise it would not be possible to supply water from the surface water resources.

"We seek to reduce supplying drinking water from water surface resource and increase use desalination," Turkmandi said.

Currently drinking water in Bandar Abbas is supplied from desalination, and from Shamil, Nian, Sarni, and Esteghlal dams.

He emphasized that garden lands in Hormozgan annually require 30 million cubic meters of water while farmlands need 15 million cubic meters of water and if the drought continues there could be challenges for water supply in February.

Khuzestan Province in southern Iran has faced a water shortage in July due to severe drought, noting that rainfall in the region has decreased by almost 50 percent in the last year, leaving dams with dwindling water supplies.
