BAKU, Azerbaijan, June 10. About 95 percent of investments in the fisheries sector in Iran have been made by the private sector over the past 2 years, Deputy Minister of Agriculture of Iran, Chairman of the Fisheries Organization Hossein Hosseini said, Trend reports.
He asserts that the country's fishing industry has received investments of 300 trillion rials, or around $796 million, in the span of only two years.
Iran produces over 1.4 million tons of fish and seafood per year, according to Hosseini. An effort is currently in progress to raise this figure to 2.6 million tons annually.
The deputy minister noted that to ensure food security in the country, special attention should be paid to seafood consumption by increasing production. Presently, the daily allowance of seafood protein for each resident of Iran is 9 grams. However, this amount should be increased to 43 grams per day.
To note, a total of 347 cooperatives are currently engaged in fisheries in the north and south of the country. 136,000 people are engaged in fishing in the country. Of these, 9,500 are engaged in fishing in the Caspian Sea in the north of the country, and 126,500 in the south, in the Persian Gulf and the Gulf of Oman.
