Iranian government's outstanding debts amounts to 540 trillion toman (about $ 179 billion according to Iranian Central Bank's official rate on Dec. 22), Minister of Economic Affairs and Finance Ali Tayyebnia said.

Ali Tayyebnia has said that the government's debt figure has doubled over the past eight months, Fars news agency reported.

Earlier in April, Ali Tayyebnia announced that the government's debt was 250 trillion toman.

According to the minister, National Iranian Oil Company's debt figure is over $48 billion.

Short after resuming office in August 2013, President Hassan Rouhani announced that his government inherited about 1800 trillion toman to the country's banking and private sector as well as contractors from its predecessor.

This is while former President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad had claimed that his government paid off all of its debt before handing over the office.
