Six years after inking a major deal with Baghdad, Iran launched export of its gas to Iraq on June 21.

Iran’s daily gas export to Iraq over the past months has doubled to reach 14 million cubic meters.

However, the two neighboring countries plan to increase the volume of gas trade to 35 million cubic meters per day within the coming weeks following the inauguration of Iran’s sixth cross-country pipeline.

ISNA news agency has described the pipeline as strategic, adding that its construction is going through the final phases and it is expected to be inaugurated in late December.

The 1,200-kilometer pipeline is meant to daily transport 110 million cubic meters of gas from Iran’s southern field of Asaluyeh to the western and northwestern provinces of the Islamic Republic.

The 56-inch pipeline will also facilitate Iran’s gas export to its western neighbor through Shalamcheh and Naftshahr routs.
