The U.S. Department of State has stressed that voter turnout at the polls on the day of parliamentary elections in Georgia was very strong, the State Department spokesman Victoria Nuland said at a press briefing in Washington, the Department's website reported.
"According to preliminary reporting, the turnout at the polls was very strong. It is obviously a very important day for Georgia," she said.
Nuland said the U.S. has been looking for a democratic election that is free, fair and transparent.
She said that the international community has had a relatively robust monitoring mission out there, including ODIHR from the - under the OSCE auspices. "And our understanding is we have NDI and IRI observers out there as well," she said.
Parliamentary elections took place in Georgia on Oct.1, which were attended by 14 parties and two political blocks.
In 2013, after amendments to the Constitution will take effect, the Parliament will receive more authority, and the rights of the head of state will be curtailed.
