Georgia's parliament plans to create a special constitutional commission to determine the type of presidential elections that should take place, parliamentary speaker David Usupashvili told Rustavi-2 TV channel on Wednesday.

He said holding a national referendum on this issue is unlikely.

"This could be also done by referendum, but I do not think one will be held. Most likely, a constitutional committee will be established that will work not only on this issue, but also on other important constitutional provisions. Fundamental changes in the Constitution will be prepared in the spring," the speaker said.

He said the issue of presidential elections should be decided not only within the coalition, but also with the participation of non-governmental and civil parties.

Responding to a question whether the Georgian Dream is trying to adjust the Constitution to its goals, Usupashvili said the coalition is preparing to move to the model of a parliamentary republic as stated in its pre-election programme.

"We stated this before the elections. We honestly told people what we wanted and therefore they voted for us. It was the National Movement that adjusted the Constitution in its favour after coming to power, "the speaker said.
