Turkey can hold a referendum in April 2017 to amend the country’s constitution, deputy chair of Turkey’s ruling Justice and Development Party, Hayati Yazici, said in an interview with NTV TV channel Oct. 19.

According to Yazici, proposals for changes to the constitution are to be submitted to Turkey’s Grand National Assembly (parliament) in January 2017.

Within the framework of the referendum, it is planned to change the form of governance in Turkey from parliamentary to presidential system.

Earlier a source in the Turkish presidential administration told Trend that it is vital for Turkey to adopt a new constitution since the current constitution “does not meet the interests of the country and its citizens.”
