Gunfire was heard Thursday near a protest in Sheikh Zuwayid, in Egypt's North Sinai, with witnesses saying shots were fired by both riot police and protesters.

Witnesses told the German Press Agency dpa that protesters had blocked the main roads in the area. A protester was killed in clashes with riot police there on Wednesday.

Meanwhile, thousands of protests resumed anti-government demonstrations in the northern coastal city of Alexandria.

And despite the presence of hundreds of riot police and armoured vehicles throughout Cairo, activists on Twitter wrote that thousands were also marching towards the capital's central Tahrir Square, which saw some of the largest demonstrations this week.

Also, the al-Arabiya television channel reported that hundreds of protesters had clashed with police in the city of Ismailiya, north of Suez.
