At least two people were killed and 17 others injured after angry protesters attacked a police station in the northwestern Tunisian town of Klef, Press TV reported.

About 1,000 people gathered in front of the Sidi Bouzid police station and turned on security forces on Saturday after a police chief reportedly slapped a woman during a demonstration.

The incident triggered violence between police and citizens, the TAP news agency reported on Saturday.

The police used tear gas and fired shots in the air to disperse the crowd.

Four policemen were arrested in connection with the death of the two young Tunisian men. An investigation is underway to establish what caused the incident.

At least 147 people were killed and 510 injured during the Tunisian revolution that unseated Tunisian President Zine El Abidine Ben Ali last month, according to the United Nations.

On January 14, President Ben Ali fled the North African country to the Saudi port city of Jeddah.

Riots and protests broke out in Tunisia following the self-immolation of a 26-year-old fruit vendor, identified as Muhammad Bouazizi, who set himself on fire after police confiscated his merchandise.
